|| StickLAN || #5 Feedback OK so people what did you think of the lan ???? time seemed to go past bery quickly in my opinion didnt get to play enough, but I still had fun.. Comments please

cabana bob- 01-15-2006

you know what makes a good lan great, when things are organised and the admin's host games to play, come on guys it was no. 5

Paradoxian- 01-15-2006

I thought there was disorganisation abound too. I don't know many of these games and rarely have time to play them. Before the next LAN I want to see: 1. A list of games to be played with version numbers (5-10 games). 2. Clear and concsise methods of aquiring said games (DVDs, Designated sources... etc). We can fix this problem up by going gigabit, and relying on trusty network, or we could run with the table groupings we currently had and run a star network with a file server or two at the centre. I think we needed the switches before people got there. Mayber we should not let others rock up before the start time. Only two or three people are needed to get tables and setup switches and cabling. When things need to copy throught the central switch, everything dies in the arse. I think that a 2 layer network should be run with one person with gigabit LAN on each table acting as that table's 'supplier'. Anyone know how to stop people copying across a network without resorting to a big stick?

Anyone know how to stop people copying across a network without resorting to a big stick? I know all too well the pain that can be caused by a big stick... :( it is indeed quite effective in stoping people from copying  ... i mean come on people i just got a new 250gig hard drive... and it still has 220gig free... i tried... but for some reason the network decided only to ever give me half a file before it would screw up on me    ah well apart from that i had an awesome time... as per usual, sure there were a few minor problems (like kenny killing my clan :( the billy goats) and the long times between different games. But still gets Billys 10 scoops of potato salad :D good job people p.s. next time dont double book with a church group...

whiteman- 01-15-2006

The double booking was not our faults, and I personaly was not happy with it ( all committe members share my anoyance ) There was a slick hick up with our switch's and what not as we where waiting for 2hrs as locky had other commitments that needed to be done 1st. 1 Week before the next lan we will have what version of what games we are running posted up on the site ( should be the la-*test*-('") ones but you know how things change ) and people can update them at home and what not. My computer was stuck installing CS for like 1 hr which stuffed me, next time it will be more organised. Another thing that will happen next time is SET CLANS, i personaly got abit peved at this as when there was 1 of the very few Clan Vs Clan battles happening alot of other people jumped in, I know we cant turn around and tell people not to play a game. Clans will be LIMITED to a max of 7 players for the set battles and what not Will post more later

Paradoxian- 01-15-2006

With respect to my grumbles with the network, here is a proposed solution. Those in the know have a look at point out any flaws... Green cables are gigabit links and blue are 10/100 links. the 'G' on certain computers are those running two network cards (gigabit and megabit). I'm unsure on how clever XP is with respect to choosing the network path with the fas-*test*-('") speed...

whiteman- 01-15-2006

Ill have a lil play later on tomorrow probably to what i thought would be the best idea for us to do. How did people like the general lay out of the lan ?? With having clans on tables and what not ? ----------------------------------------------------- Im openly admitting a fair bit of fault to the lack of organisation of the games, next time we will go back to having a pre set time table and what not, If we have set clans ( knowing them 1 week befor the lan ) then i can set out clan battles at set times, with set food times ( also leeching times ) it worked pritty good the 1st time we did it at Sticklan #3 but I think it just slipped our minds for #5, again i take responibilty for that

Billy- 01-15-2006

Well i still had a great time :) i also like the clan idea and we should stick with it, that way it limites (like you said) 7 people to a table, and those 7 people are always on the same team. That way the people are in easy to access work groups too which was good. And next time if we get a clan round robbin working so that only 2 clans are in that game... and the other clans are in differnt games (e.g. cod2, 2 clans are against each other, and another 2 clans in a different server(same map though) the winning clans fight eachother on a new map next game, and the two loosing teams play each other for 3rd place, and each team/clan is awarded points at the end of the battle... ie. winning team gets 5 points, second gets 3, third gets 2 and last gets 1 for participation.) something like that, its just an idea then the same could be done in strat games, may be a little harder seeing as most strat games dont allow for 7 per team... so the clan would have to choose who sits out for that game...etc Also i agree with whiteman that sticklan 3 was good in that Tim wrote the order of the day down on the white board before the games started so we knew when comps were to take place and so forth.

whiteman- 01-15-2006

Thanks for readiny my mind billy, but dont read to much of it :P but yes that is what i have planned for Future sticklans ( im actually thinking of how im going to set it all up as we speak as im at work in the building with no one elce )

julius- 01-15-2006

yeh, agreed to most stuff i also think that there needs to be some sort of structure to whats gonna be played when and the winning clan plays on kinda thing as billy mentioned so its more competitive... the table thing i liked, all in all i think it was a good set up but then again yeh there needs to be a notification on what certain versions of what games are gonna be played so people can aquire them before the lan, for example i had SWAT 4 and all but it was one version back, so then i had to copy the other version and shite so that always takes up time, i think it was tried to be done through the forum here, but more people need to get on to the forum... but yeh good lan... thumbs up from me

Guys you suck as admin

whiteman- 01-16-2006

Well i got 2 tim should have 2, and any one with gigabit lan can spend $15 on a new card soooo costy...............

M/-D.DeNMaN- 01-16-2006

you can set the order with networkcards to work in on XP under advance settings in network connections.. but that layout is really bad.. ill put together a nice layout, but i need info on the switches and how many ports on the gigabite switch my machine has 2x gigabite nic's... and i think most new mobo's have this now.. what you should do is get rid of that loop with hte 10/100 and set the people with gigabyte into bridgemode... it's less cables, less a switch + more efficient bandwidth across the site

M/-D.DeNMaN- 01-16-2006

actually, that will only be efficient if you had 1gig links going both ways.. ill draw somthing up when i get home anyways

Paradoxian- 01-17-2006

Guys you suck as admin You know what, it's true. We didn't initally want this to be a professional thing. the 'admin' are all paying the same entry fee as you guys, and more as we're buying bits and pieces when we can. If you are just going to tell us we suck, you can just go away. If you would like to see a big LAN in the local area, offer us support which we need. You know what games are good and what versions are good for a network. You have the facilities at your disposal to organise for these games to get to everyone the fas-*test*-('"). This is something that no-one else seems to be able to do. If you could do that, it would be greatly appreciated and would make the LAN actually WORK. If I had these games, or played them, or could get them, I would do this. If you know all this by plain general knowledge, then you are an asset that is sorely needed.
