If all of us can put in $100 ( not a bank breaking amount ) then we can get this thing off the ground a lil more ( Me was thinking a 8port gigabit switch then 4(*maybe more ) , 16port's ( or maybe 8 ports depending on $$$$ and what is more practical on the way we set up the venue ) with gigabit uplinks. then start working on servers and what not, As i said we have a few servers floating around, I might even be able to bring my family computer ( if none of my sisters are living at home ) which isnt a shabby lil server as long as it dont frezze and what not

james i dont work five days a week and $100 is a bank breaking amount for me. I think the last lan i was at was great save a few problems (ie. power and finding a game for everyone). But we've learnt since then. we now know how the power works, and we will have a set list of games. End of story lets just achieve a Lan with a good turnout and some fun gameplay. I think people are getting a little ahead of themselves at the moment and missing the main issue: GAMING!!

Guy! your looking at the wrong things.. The servers are fine most people can host if needed, the main thing is Switchers (Gigabit uplink - You need to move large amounts of data). New Games are not made for the 1G processers any more, they need 2G processer, 1G Ram, 256Mb 6600 or better Video Card, a crap load of HDD space account for this. If you can not get a great server then don't build a crap one. One Great server will run what your Three already do! 2G processer 1G Ram 256Mb 6600 or better Video Card and a crap load of HDD space and a PCI Gigabit card or 2 not onboard. (Not cheap so Don't hurry to get it switchers a cheaper and the market wont change every 2 days. At the end of the day you want to offer people something better then the next guy. There is no point having Great Servers if the data wont get to the Games.. One More thing HAPPY NEW YEAR to all at STICKLAN

to get two switches with gigabit uplink would be easily over $300. it's money we don't have. The halls in the area have a power limitation, and we can't overcome that until we rewire the place. This means we won't be able to get anywhere near 100-150 people due to power and space restrictions. We'll look into more switches down the track, but we're making $100 profit each LAN tops.

whiteman- 01-01-2006

thats if the people that say they are coming come, unlike last lan was it 15people ???? Things are going to have to stay the same untill we start getting alot more people coming. if leaching is stoped during game play times and if we organise out switch's properly then we wont have any probs with pings.

Spawn- 01-04-2006

if you fix the network issues and the servers then you will end up turning people away because you don't have the room, use ya head. 15 people is a waste of time and if it happens again you will need to shut the lan down for that weekend, I think you need to advertise it a little better. Telling people the day after the lan has run isn't gonna cut it, you need to spend money to make money.

Well said Lime...

Spawn- 01-05-2006

done, enjoy your lan

Billy- 01-05-2006

woah... then who am i going to leech off

I leave you alone for two days and this is what happens? SPACE - If anyone knows a hall in the macedon ranges that can hold more people, please tell me. The only halls I know are the basket ball stadiums. We would need to get tressel tables from Jubilee hall, woodend community centre, and Tony Clark reserve. We would need to effectively book ALL these places, as we would be using all their equipment (tables). POWER - NO hall in the Macedon ranges has the power that we are after. We would need an electrician to rewire a hall/stadium for us before we could go ahead. If we could even do this is a different question entirely. INTEREST - The interest isn't that huge around here. To get more people we would need to expand our field of advertising to Bendigo and Melbourne. If people are willing to come from either of these places to Woodend, they could make the 2hr trip to the city for the larger 500+ people LANs. Those LANs offer prizes and equipment that we cannot match . In Darren's words, this LAN is my 'baby'. I wanted to get a bit more organised than just filling someone's house with 10 people for a LAN. I remember when 15 people was a HUGE LAN. Now I got a few people behind me who would like to see a regular local LAN that is bigger than your average house can hold. StickLAN is that LAN. If we could get the hall for free, the entry cost would be free! With the extra cash we get nowdays, we can slowly work towards getting proper StickLAN equipment. Right now, it is a collective effort of about 6 people who aren't doing this for any other reason than wanting to have a LAN they can call there own. I don't agree with Lockie's harsh words, but I feel we just can't do what you're suggesting Spawn. It would be insane for us not to if Woodend was Ballarat or Bendigo, but it is just the little old Macedon Ranges...

Thanks Tim i couldnt say it so easerly Im a lazy typer BUT WHAT TIME SAID IS LAW plan Simple ITS LAW

Spawn- 01-05-2006

Thanks Tim, I understand what you are saying, but Darren, Whiteman and yourself all told me, to post what I thought need to be looked at as a gamer and network admin. Now if you don't like what I have to say then find I can stop posting msg I don't really care. But the opinions I give are also the ones of Elysium, Cleto, Ghost, Kemo and Cowboy so it is not just me thinking I am better then the rest it is that we game way to much and what we have to say are just ideas and nothing else. As for all the things I am suggesting, I know that money is a problem but all I am saying is you need to aim for something that's all, If you don't step goals with the network then it will never get better, With the servers you don't need to get the old part from everyone to build a crappy server, look for newer stuff, to get you started I have a AMD 2G processer and I may have a motherboard It's not great but it is free you can have it (Come and get it). I don't good to sticklan to find all you faults there are games I like playing, so much that I did an upgrade for this Sticklan so i would be able to play everything and the newest games on you list are DOW - WA and Battlefront II not the grea-*test*-('") for large games. You all know the amount of shit I have got if there is things you need that will improve the gaming at Sticklan let me know, you can have it I don't care. Now ith the power, the power in the macedon rangers is crap, but if you space the computers evenly (e.g 6 PC's per power point) it will even the load and flow of power, the last thing you want is to cook soomeones computer find out what is what first and tell people where they can sit. At the last Sticklan I went to I have mate come from the other side of the city and I'm sure that other people did too, so the interest is there, so if we all ask other mate I don't see why you couldn't get the turn out you want but if things stay the same people wont travel to sit there and have to downlaod map after map to play and never go on it is no longer funny! I Hope STICKLAN goes well, Good Luck SPAWN

whiteman- 01-05-2006

The last stick lan that was held #4 we had the power sorted out ( i kept forgetting you wernt at that one ) as we had some long power cords coming from other parts of the building. And thanks to all comments as they do help Jimmy/ aka Whiteman

CronDaemour- 01-06-2006

Nice debating kiddies, cheers for the defence lockie, and john and lockie slow down bit and take a chill pill. like i said before we were missing the point, i see what john is getting at, and with all that criticism it is all valid. Lets just not take every word for gospel and see what we can work with. These things will all happen with time... time is our friend....

To finish off if you don’t like the show FUCK OFF!!! I’m sure there’s plenty of LAN parties the size of ours around Riddell’s Creek. Why don’t you go and organise them. the words that i feel are required here are CONSTRUCTIVE CRITASISM (ignore the spelling), why is it that red lime is getting so cut up over some issues that have been raised from the last couple of lans that where attended, i thought the forum was here so we could tell you the problems we have observed over the past several lans. i think what you guys do is great and all the fun we have at the lan is a buzz, i will still come to stick lan 5 but with insults like that being thrown from ADMIN to PAYING customers it concerns me that it is more of a money making cut throat buisness than a fun time, for it it turnes to the former i feel my place will no longer be accepted at you lans and that my friends will be a real downer. What did you guys think? let us know the pros and cons. need i say more. you asked for what we thought, so dont attack the customers, this is our opinion, whilst you dont have to agree with us, you should listen because the only way to get things done is by CONSTRUCTIVE COMMUNICATION, that is what the forums are all about, so don't slag of the customers, (as you put it) and we will try to enjoy the valuable service in which you provide. does any one remember the lan at tims old house, the memories, the memories
